Continuing with our African theme this week and the children took part in an African dance workshop. They learnt some traditional moves and then put them together in small groups to create their own performance piece.

Sky Studio Visit

This week, year 5 were incredibly lucky to pay a visit to Sky Studios in London. The children not only had a tour of their state of the art facilities but also had the chance to record their own news report. Splitting into 4 teams, all the children had an important role to play in the creation of their report, from producer to cameraman (or woman!) and editor. The end result was a 6 minute broadcast full of facts and information. An amazing day out! Check out the pictures and video below!

As part of this weeks international theme, the children have been lucky enough to take part in an African drumming workshop. They got to grips with traditional instruments and challenged each other to follow their rhythm.

Send my Child to School

Year 5 were shocked to discover that not every child in the world has access to an education. They have been learning about the Send My Friend to School campaign, which is asking children to contact local MP’s and ask for their help in pushing this issue to the forefront at the world leader assembly later this year. Excitingly, Year 5 will use their persuasive skills to write to David Cameron, explaining to him why this is such an important issue.

Keep your eyes peeled for the letters later this week!

Year 5 had a fantastic day at Northampton Saints Rugby Ground. The children spent the morning playing games and then we’re lucky enough to get a guided tour around the stadium, including a sneaky peek in the changing rooms and some of the luxury boxes!

To celebrate the end of health week and because it’s the end of our Stone Age topic, year 5 have been cooking this morning!

We made Stone Age soup, which was incredibly healthy and jam packed full of veggies! The children peeled, cut and cooked the thick soup themselves and then got to sample their handiwork! If you feel like having a go, the recipe is below…

Ingredients:

1 potato, leek, carrot, onion, courgette, parsnip.

50g of peas

Small can of tomatoes

500ml of water

1 tbsp of bouillon powder

Method:

1. Wash hands carefully and cover clothes with apron.

2. Peel carrots, potatoes, parsnips and onion.

3. Chop all the vegetables carefully.

4. Put all the prepared vegetables into the pan (not peas and tomatoes).

6. Add water and bouillon and heat to boiling point.

7. Reduce to simmer and cook for a further 20 minutes.

8. Carefully remove one third of the vegetables and purée in a blender with half a can of tomatoes.

9. Put the puréed vegetables back in the pan with the remaining tomatoes and the peas. Heat until ready to eat.

10. Enjoy your healthy dinner!
